This is a reminder of the remarkable power of food, and specifically polyphenols, to support
heart and vascular health.
In clinical research, a very small daily dose of pomegranate juice was associated with meaningful
cardiovascular benefits.
Just 50 mL of juice per day (about 3–4 tablespoons) was linked to:
• Reduced carotid artery thickness (CIMT)
• Lower blood pressure
• Less LDL oxidation
• Improved antioxidant activity (1)
Notably, these effects were seen even in people with established carotid artery disease,
underscoring the protective role of polyphenols in cardiovascular health.
How to use it (according to the study)
• Amount: 50 mL (≈ 1.7 oz, less than ¼ cup)
• Timing: Morning or earlier in the day
• How: Take it straight, dilute with water, or add to a smoothie or yogurt. Pairing it with a fiber-rich meal helps blunt blood sugar spikes.
• Consistency matters: Benefits were seen with daily use over time
Why it works:
Pomegranate is rich in compounds such as punicalagins and ellagic acid, potent polyphenols that
help protect the endothelium, reduce oxidative stress, and support healthy blood vessels.
This is a great reminder that when used thoughtfully, even juice can act as a functional food,
delivering concentrated polyphenols that support vascular health, especially in the context of a
whole-food, plant-predominant diet.
This is the power of food as medicine. ❤️
As always, individual needs and results vary. This is not a substitute for appropriate medical
therapy.
